April 13, 2014: Northshore Concert Band: Echoes of Light
3:00 pm | Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, Evanston IL
Fanfare for a New Era was written as a celebration of Lt. Col. Lowell E. Graham's appointment as Commander of the United States Air Force Band. The work, composed by Jack Stamp, opens with an energetic trumpet motif that is expanded and developed through a variety of characters and atmospheres.
Also featured on the program is Frank Ticheli's Angels in the Architecture, a work that unfolds as a dramatic conflict between the two extremes of human existence: one divine, the other evil. The work begins and ends with an "angel," represented by a solo voice, who sings a Shaker melody meant to inspire purity and light. Other representations of light - played by instruments rather than sung - include a traditional Hebrew song of peace and the well-known 16th-century hymn "Old Hundredth." These three borrowed songs, despite their varied religious origins, are meant to transcend any one religion, representing the more universal human ideals of peace, hope, and love.
Program to include:
Jack Stamp - Fanfare for a New Era
Frank Ticheli - Angels in the Architecture
James Curnow - Rejouissance
Derek Bourgeois - Serenade Op. 22
Philip Sparke - Dance Movements
